We will soon be offering strain specific wax which give a strong and more concentrated effect for the advanced marijuana consumer. There are major dangers to creating this type of product at home and a new law has been passed in Colorado, effective July 1, 2015.
Please always practice safe methods of marijuana consumption.
The law is punishable by 4-8 years in prison plus a maximum of a $750,000 fine. We are pleased to be announcing our concentrates will soon be available for the safety of all our customers and urge you not to attempt production at home due to the highly flammable nature of extraction.
“Concentrate” is becoming an ambiguous word in the cannabis industry.
It could refer to the wax you vaporize, the tincture under your tongue, or the orally administered THC-free cannabis oil that’s changing attitudes toward cannabis everywhere. The future of cannabis is steering toward these potent concentrated forms, especially as the therapeutic potential of non-smoking methods is realized by the public.
How Do You Make Hash and Wax Oils?
To correctly make marijuana hash oil and wax you need to extract the THC/CBD from the plant matter.
Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and Cannabidiol (CBD) are one of at least 85 active cannabinoids identified in cannabis. THC is the main psychoactive ingredient in the plant and the most commonly sought after type of wax/oil concentrate. We produce the product from our own strains so any bud you find in our store can also be available as hash oil.
There are a couple of ways to extract the crystals and form an oil type consistency. Step one is to choose a solvent to flush out the plant matter and leave you with the potent oil or wax. Some of the popular extraction choices are to use CO2, ethanol, butane, and diethyl ether.
At SOMA we use Butane, Propane, and a combination of both to produce the best concentrate corresponding to the quality of the trim being used to make the wax.
After the THC is extracted, the concentrate and now liquid form material is then boiled into the finished product, “the goop”. There are many ways to continue the purging process that improve the purity that we will get into in another article. Wax is made in a similar process; unlike hash oil, wax can only be made with butane.
In result, the wax can be, but not limited to, 80%+ pure THC!
The finished product can come out in several different forms: it can be brittle, powdery, a toothpaste consistency, or in an oil consistency; either way you will get the same strong, relaxing high. There are many different ways to then consume the hash or wax oil many dependent on the consistency that is produced.
“Whatever process you use will have a different result, whatever strain you use will have a different result, what pressure and temperature you use will have a different result,”
– AC Braddock, CEO of Seattle-based Eden Labs
New Policies in Colorado for Extraction
A new wave of DIY experiments have taken the country by storm and there are new regulations in Colorado.
There have been many cases of home explosions from people attempting to make hash oils and waxes at home. Since the solvent, butane or propane, that people often use is flammable, the environment has to be totally clean and controlled.
If the space is not clean any spark, even a small one, can cause a Breaking Bad grade explosion.
In the states where marijuana consumption is legal, laws have been been put in place making the production of hash oil and wax in a residential settings or anywhere where the solvent cannot be contained illegal.
A new law was just passed in Colorado making it a DF2 drug felony to use hazardous materials in extracting the concentrates, such as butane, propane, and diethyl ether. The qualification for a “hazardous material” is any flammable liquid.
Effective July 1, 2015 this law is punishable by 4-8 years in prison plus a maximum of a $750,000 fine.
The law was passed as a way to clarify a section in the Colorado constitution; the constitution protects those who manufacture hash oils and waxes, but criminal laws prosecute those who do. The legislation is meant to keep everyone safe. Not only will the person manufacturing the concentrates be liable, but also homeowners, property owners, property managers, and landlords who knowingly allow the concentrates to be made will be prosecuted.
California seemed to get there first. In 2008 a bill was passed specifically making the production of butane hash oil and wax home illegal and punishable by 5-7 years in prison and a maximum of a $50,000 fine. Additionally if a child lives or is harmed by the production, 5 years may be added.
Wax for CO Licensed Recreational Facilities
We will process trim for any CO licensed recreational cultivation facility. We do not process for individuals. Please use this form to request our services and a far safer method than attempting the process on your own. Thank you for choosing safety.
You can also buy local Colorado cannabis in bulk or wholesale from our reserves by using this form to tell us more about what you are interested in receiving and how often. Keep in mind we can not fullfill every request and you must be a registered recreational facility to purchase large quantities.
